PASSPORTS & VISAS

Passports must be valid for at least six months from the time of arrival.

The visa policy, effective from 1 June 2006, states all foreign nationals except the following countries: Brunei, Chile, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam can apply for a Transit (seven days’ maximum stay) and/or tourist visa upon arrival at most airports/seaports in Indonesia for a maximum visit of 30 days. All visa enquiries should be directed to the Indonesian embassy.

CUSTOMS

Customs regulations allow, per adult, a maximum of one litre of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 100 gram of tobacco and a reasonable amount of perfume. Photographic, video and filming equipment, radio, typewriter and cars are admitted if they are recorded in you passport on entry and taken with you on departure. Fresh fruit, plants and animals must be passed by the Quarantine Office.

CURRENCY

ATMs are plentiful in popular destinations and many banks will exchange travellers’ cheques and US dollars. The Indonesian currency is the Rupiah and comes in denominations of 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000.

CLIMATE

Bali enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures of around 30°C year-round.

There are two seasons: dry from April to October and wet from November to March. The wet season is characterised by short sharp downfalls, yet expect frequent sunny spells and high temperatures. The dry season brings sunshine, infrequent showers and cooling breezes. If venturing into the mountains prepare for cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall.

LANGUAGE

English is spoken in most tourist areas. The national language of Indonesia is Bahasa Indonesia, descended from Malay, with Dutch and Javanese influences. It is considered one of the easiest languages to learn. A fascinating 250 regional dialects are also spoken throughout the archipelago.

HEALTH

Travellers should be immunised against hepatitis A. Depending on the length of your stay and itinerary, vaccination for Japanese encephalitis, rabies, typhoid and hepatitis B may also be needed. Please consult your doctor or local health authority for advice.

DRESS CODE

Light, airy clothes in natural fibres such as cotton or linen are suitable. Shorts are not permitted in mosques and women should cover their head and arms. Waist sashes should also be worn when visiting temples. A light cardigan or sweater is recommended in mountainous areas where temperatures are cooler and the climate is wetter.
